2022 Tucson Hybrid Owner (Blue) - MPG and driving update

Hi All,

I have clocked almost 950 miles on the car so far,

  • Avg MPG sits around 36-37
  • Since last re-fuel i did about 503miles on a full tank with avg. 37-38mpg

So far it has been great, battery is not too bad, i try to drive in EV mode as much as possible. I did notice when I would try to be in EV mode my MPG is a bit less, but if i drove normal without looking at the charge guage it would be a bit better.

Maybe it is just me..

But the car is well, I am happy with the handling, acceleration and AWD capability (Note I have not tested it yet).

More updates to come, We have a VW Atlas, and that car gets 310-340 on a full tank, so really happy to get 500miles on a full tank.

Of course it cannot beat my old VW Golf Diesel (2011), it would get almost 750 miles on a full tank.

How much of that is highway driving?

If I’m doing a mix of driving, country two lanes, city, limited highway - the mileage is great. Trips only in the city where I maximize EV mode get 50+ mpg.

Straight highway driving with some slight hills and 75 mph nets ~ 31 mpg.

We put ~ 1,500 miles on it last week driving to see family and have ~2,400 miles on the odometer. Total average per the trip computer is a little less than 35. Given the size of it I’m not too upset, but this is the first vehicle that has gotten less than stated mpg.

Glad to hear you are enjoying yours. Cheers.

I've got about 2500 miles on my blue hybrid. When I first started driving, 8 was getting close to 40 mpg driving with a light foot, trying to maximize EV mode. Now many miles layer,I feel like I'm getting worse milage. More like 36 mpg now. And. Still driving to maximize my mpg. Only difference is now I have the heat on inside the cabin. Anyone else seeing worse mpg over time.

Having a similar experience. I'm thinking more ICE needed to keep heat up, and a lot more headlight usage could be drawing off power. Windshield wipers too for that matter??

Same experience here. Got in it the other day and noticed the engine stayed on the first several minutes until it warmed up, it then would engage EV mode. Mileage has decreased noticeably. Have averaged 37.5 over the 8,000 miles we have in it. The current tank is averaging 33.5 with a lot of city driving. And here I thought it would be the AC in the summer that cut mileage…

I'll bring it up when I go for service. Seems like the battery is more or less designed to stay only halfway charged, if you look at the dashboard gauge. I also have a Rav 4 hybrid which has a bigger engine, and get over 40 mpgs at a minimum. Sometimes even up to 45 if I'm paying attention to how I drive. The Rav 4 will charge the battery to almost full at all times except highway driving where it stays around half. Great in the city. I get a lot more EV use for longer times. Maybe it's a computer programming issue. If they would allow the Tuscon battery to take more 9f a charge, maybe we could get more use and better fuel economy.

Yeah. I have had the battery up to full on several occasions driving in the mountains. Long downhills charge it up pretty well. But it discharges fast too.

Really enjoy the styling and features of the Tucson but have a bit of buyers regret at not going with the RAV4 Prime. Though I found those seats to be really uncomfortable.

It's all give and take. The only thing I didn't like on the tav 4 was the interior space for the driver. I'm 6 ft 5all and my head rubbed on the sunroof trim. Not good enough for me. Perfect for my wife who's shorter.

Yes, lower temps will burn more fuel in addition to the requirement for heat. Plus, my mileage dropped immediately when I switched to winter tires.

We had 3 below freezing nights here in New England. Jumped in my wife's Tuscon Hybrid tonight and noticed the mileage since last refueling went below 30 mpg from 37.5 average on previous fillup. Noticed that as long as the heater was on the gas motor stayed running even when parked. The second I turned off the heat the gas motor shut down and the eco light popped on. Anybody else notice this?

On a long trip I will switch to Power mode when cruising and the battery will fully charge in about 10 minutes of cruising at 65 to 70. (I discovered that by accident on my first test drive. I was on the highway in power mode, mistook the battery gauge for a temperature gauge and thought I overheated the engine ha.) Then I switch back to eco. The car will cruise a little better on battery only until the charge falls below 1/2. It doesn't seem to affect the fuel economy at all. Also, if the battery falls below 1/2 at the end of the driving day, I sometimes drive a little in power mode until the battery goes above 1/2.

Interesting. I had a 2014 Audi Q5 diesel & could get from Toronto to Detroit & back on full tank. Just did the same but better with the Tuscon PHEV. Mixed mileage was around 48 miles to the gallon i.e. EV & Hybrid on auto. Audi around 30. Just wish Tuscon would not reset driver assist settings when shut down. Also if you use hearing aids with Waze sound still goes through car's speaker as the car's bluetooth takes precedence. Only a pain for 'ole codgers like me!
