So I got the new 2022 Tucson PHEV about 2 weeks ago and noticed that when I was in EV mode the engine would switch on and didn't know why. after some research both on reddit and on the Hyundai website in fine print it says that that even in EV mode the engine may engage when 1) you accelerate the car and need more power 2) the battery is low and 3) when engaging the climate controls to heat the cabin. So today I turned off all climate control and because it's chilly in vancouver only turned on the heated steering wheel and seat. drove about 12 KMs return trip and EV was engaged all the way but the gas tank indicator still dropped. anyone else notice this? makes me think EV mode is never really pure EV but still dips into the fuel tank

I picked up my 2022 Tucson PHEV on Sept 28th, I noticed the same thing after the first few days of playing around with it. Anyway after some fiddling it seems when I turn off the climate control it does not do it anymore and stays on EV. I tried it with the seat warmer and steering wheel warmer and it still stayed on EV. Periodically, let's say in four or five days it may cycle the motor and I am not sure why (maybe just to cycle the motor). Regardless, most of the time it is on EV and I have to say that this is an amazing car.

Yep I found once I keep climate control off and only use heated seats and steering wheel it's all good, my fuel consumption has barely changed last two weeks. when the windows fog up I blast the air on the lowest setting which seems to work and not engage the engine for now but unsure when it gets colder the heat may kick in accidentally

I believe the answer to your questions is explained in this video -
at 15:20. It's the Santa Fe PHEV in this video, but its the same with Tucson PHEV.

Nice video-definitely worth watching. Their channel also has some helpful videos explaining many features. Easier for me than wading thru the 1000+ pages of documentation.
On my HEV, I have changed the RH display to be the rev counter - so I can easily see when the engine is running. Maybe that will help PHEV users as well?
