2023 Tucson trim and rear view mirror issues

912 Views 23 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  garyahouse
Have a question, bought my Tucson in June of 2022, within 3 months the lower trim was stained from road grime. will not come off and dealership tried to tell me it was from a chemical. Nope! Also at Christmas with my car sitting in the driveway my rear view mirror cracked, Hyundai will not help, as of right now, with either issue. I did not get the sealer they were pushing, I know things will fade over time. Did not know that the trim was such a poor quality that it would immediately stain.

Anyone else with these issues??
Thanks

Why do you say nope? How do you know? I'm betting it was something on the road. Mirror would be covered not sure for how long, unless it isn't the one that came with the car.
What have you used to try to clean the bottom cladding? A spray-on foaming tire cleaner and bristle brush followed by 303 Protectant (or similar product) will restore the cladding to like new and keep it that way for quite a while.

Just ordered some 303 Protectant, on your recommendation, hope it works :sneaky:

I like it as a tire dressing. I don't like the shiny dressings. 303 will leave a finish that looks like new rubber. I wait till it goes for sale at one of the auto parts stores.

I've got 1.5 years on my Tucson and no trim staining, dealer was probably right regarding some chemical from the road.

Need pics of both issues to understand exactly what you're talking about.

The only chemicals ever sprayed on the roads here are for ice, this happened way before winter, and no treatment was used this year anyways. The only substance on the roads was normal everyday dirt.

Hyundai is not covering the mirror since it is something they have never seen happen before.

Have you tried wiping with armor-all? It worked wonderfully for me, and helps keep the platic trim from aging also.

I'd try either escalating at the dealer or contract Hyundai directly for the mirror.

They absolutely should be replacing that review mirror, doesn't matter if they haven't seen it before.

Don't see how they can justify that as damaged you caused.

Often these dealers need to be pushed to do the right thing. 100% should be fixed for free under warranty.

In my area they begin working on the bridges this time of year to repair the salt-damaged concrete. There's a sealant they spray on the re-surfaced concrete. If you drive through the sealant--I don't know how you would clean it off. "Normal everyday dirt" comes off the cladding quite easily.
1. From that picture the mirror does not look cracked - in person are you certain it is cracked? Looks like a defect in the dimming of it. Also they would have to prove you did something to do whatever is wrong, so be persistent that should be covered. That they never saw it before means zero, zilch, nada.

2. The dirt/stains, nothing I see says it is Hyundai's fault or that it won't come off with the right cleaner and some work. It is obvious to me it came up from the road or parking lot. Can only go by pics of course but it looks like the water from making cement that gets washed off by construction people.

There is a line running from top to bottom just right of center.

I have been to two dealerships, Hyundai customer care center, who after denying both problems sent me to BBB Autoline, who I am currently working with.

I was posting on here to see if anyone else has had either issue. I found a couple posts a few months back dealing with the trim staining but can no longer find them. (not sure if it was this site or not) My understanding is that the trim Hyundai uses is very porous and prone to staining, this is from the manager at the car wash I have used for 20+ years.

Yes I know about the OTC products, the dealership even used one on a section of the trim and was able to remove some of the staining but made no effort to clean the rest. I am physically unable to do that and on a brand new car don't think I should have to. 5+ years down the road, yes I can see having to have a sealer/cleaner used but not this soon.

I am working on getting them to see the error of their ways.

I call BS on the car wash guy.
Maybe you can convince someone at a dealership to do something, I'm not saying to give up. I am saying there are thousands of 2022/2023 Tucsons on the road and this is not something that is coming up. There are things that can go wrong that maybe no one else has had the problem but it did happen. In fact your mirror is one of them. Maybe it had a slight break when made and now like glass can do, it spread.
But there are other things that just taking a moment to think about it - if there was a problem with materials used there should be many posts about it.

When you say a line running through the mirror, you mean an actual break you can feel as you run your finger over it?
Either way that should be covered unless they can prove you did it. It's not like a broken tail light or something that more likely did get hit.
To all: 303 protectant has been my go to for may years.
Research back then, showed that the additives in Armor-All were NOT beneficial to vinyl and trim!
I also wipe the door seals with 303 every couple months to keep them pliable and maximize their effectiveness for road noise and dust.
If I get excessive polish on the black trim, I do need to use a back-to-black type material as just the 303 doesn't address it entirely.

I also use 303 twice a year on the plastic side jambs of the house windows. No squeaks, easy movement and no discoloration!
