I noticed that the air conditioning seems a bit wimpy on my 2023 hybrid and made me wonder how it works. In traditional cars, the AC compressor runs off a drive belt from the crankshaft and can run whenever the engine is running. When in EV mode, the hybrid engine is not running (zero rpm as seen on the tach) so either the compressor is not running or it has an alternative power source. Not running could explain the wimpy performance. I also believe I read somewhere that the AC has diminished performance with running the car in ECO mode. That would be consistent with more EV use in ECO mode. Does anyone know how the AC actually works?
