cannot open/close garage doors with button unless car is on. True?

Is this the case? Set up homelink garage door remote opening with buttons under rear view mirror. Works fine from outside and inside of garage when car is on... but nmot when it is off. Very inconvenient. Is this your experience? Is there a way to override this limit?

thanks.

Probably a safety feature. Say somebody breaks into your car when it’s parked outside, hits the button and gets access to your garage and potentially house.

I found this a bit different as well, but I am changing my habits to work with it this way. It is a more secure approach.

Yes this was on purpose. No, there isn't a way to change it (at least not one that I can locate). Like someone else said, it's a security feature so people can't open your garage door without a car key. IMO, that's stupid:

Stand alone garage remotes have worked independent of car ignitions for decades; if a thief is determined enough to break into my car or garage, this feature ain't stopping them; and frankly, carbon monoxide build-up is a much greater danger. You should be able to open your garage door in a closed garage without running the engine.
