Curt Hitch and Trailer Wiring

Hyundai made it extremely easy to install a hitch and wiring on the Tucson. It took me about 30 minutes to install the Curt hitch and trailer wiring that I got from etrailers.com, just under $300.

The hitch installs with six 17mm bolts into nuts that are welded into the frame, torqued to 48ft-pounds. There is one piece of plastic trim under the rear bumper that is removed and not used once the hitch is installed. The muffler does not need to be loosened or moved.

What makes the wiring install so easy is that Hyundai installed the wiring connecter just behind the drivers side rear wheel, just hanging there ready to use.

Just remove the blue tape and cover protecting the connector. Plug in the one on the wiring kit from Curt, insert the fuse, secure everything under the rear bumper and done.

Timely post for me. I highly appreciate if you share photos or information on how you connected the wiring. Also, Can the plastic trim be installed after installing hitch ? or is it your personal choice not to install ? Thanks

I was just checking on that and I think it requires just a minor trim, by removing what I marked with red lines it should fit. This is the upper forward side of it tucked up under the car, not visible. I'll be trying it later this afternoon

Thank you . Please post some photos and information on how you connected the wiring.

BTW, in another discussion i see that we can use this mounting bracket https://www.etrailer.com/p-18140.html

took a bit more trimming than expected but I'm happy with the result. Tin snips cut the plastic easily, I split the piece in half and removed the material in the back that was blocked by the hitch.

I was able to route the 4 flat wiring out an existing opening on the pass. side.

the wiring is just too easy to really add much more, the red arrow is pointing to the Hyundai provided connector that the Curt wiring kit plugs into (once you remove the dust cap, it's that thing just above the red arrow) I removed the upper blue tape and the nylon zip tie under it, I left the lower blue tape in place, no need to remove it.

Hi Rogerdodger. Do you think we still need to cut that plastic trim if we use the Draw-Tite Hitch https://www.etrailer.com/p-DT22MR.html ?

I can't say but per etrailer notes, the Draw-Tite is slightly more difficult to install and requires:
------------------------------
No drilling required for installation
Underbody panel(s) and/or fascia must be temporarily loosened or removed.
Trimming may be needed to reattach panel or fascia.
Exhaust must be temporarily lowered for installation
------------------------------

Nice job!
I wonder if the Idle Stop and Go (ISG) would be disabled when you plug in the trailer lights? Some people with Chyrsler and Ford 150 products use a dummy connector plugged in to disable that function.
I find it irritating to have to push the button everytime you stop the engine to override this feature.

Again, nice and clean looking!
Hi Rogerdodger : What was your order to receive timeline for the Curt Hitch.? Etrailer is showing Nov 17th date for me. I am out here in TX.

I installed the Draw-Tite Hitch and YES you have to trim the plastic trim. I just kept the front maybe 4 inches and attached with the existing plastic tabs worked great.

I got the Draw-Tite as well (Curt was backordered), I just removed the panel but I may try trimming it. Didn't need to lower the exhaust or remove the passenger side under body panel either, but it did require a low profile ratchet.

Where are you guys sticking the wiring harness controller? I'd like to keep it out of salt exposure if I can, not thrilled it's just a sticky pad to adhere to the car.
I highly recommend the wiring harness that etrailor sells
I have used them for three of vehicles in the past. A Chevrolet Van. Ford Transit Connect and a Jeep Compass. I haven't purchased the one for Hyundai Tuscan Limited PHEV yet but have researched it as a very easy install.
Has anyone used their tow hitch for towing or for a loaded-up bike rack yet? Are the rear sensors sensors an issue in terms of blindspot monitoring, warnings, etc. when driving, backing?

I don't have the fancy model (upgraded SEL), but my Kuat NV2 rack sits up above the rear facing sensors. It has not alarmed when backing up, and I haven't had any cross traffic when using the rack but I'm pretty sure it would work fine.

Highly recommend the Kuat NV2 or Base as well, I've worked at a few bike shops and this rack is incredible. The 1Up brand is probably a close match as well and should work on your Tucson.

The Rear Collision Sensors do come on when you have something in the tow hitch. I tried a bike rack (with and without a bike) and a boat trailer with the wire harness plugged in (I have the Hyundai OEM wire harness). In every case, when I put the car in reverse, the collision warning comes on with the tone. It is fine though, I can still back up (yes I tried). I don't spend a lot of time in reverse, so I can live with the tone. No need to add a switch to disable the rear parking sensors.
(and no I don't recommend this bike rack. it is a pain to load bikes onto it, but it is the one I have so...)
