Description & Operation

"The VESS (Virtual engine sound system) generates engine sound when you start the EV system.
This sound is for pedestrians to hear vehicle sound because there is no engine sound in EV driving.
VESS operates when vehicle speed is between 0.5 - 28km/n." - Hyundaitechinfo.com

Removal for Maintainence
First, remove the under cover from the front of the vehicle, then remove the front bumper assembly.
It appears to be very simple, but like any teardown, you could always snap something improperly - so work patiently.

The VESS speaker (diagrams below) appears to be a small 5x5 closed/slotted speaker housing.
Not sure what I'll do when I reach it - I'm thinking I'll remove the assembly from the vehicle, opening the housing, and dampen the entire interior of the housing. Or maybe replace the speaker? Idk yet. I'll keep yall posted.

Gorilla tape worked perfectly to dampen the sound, yet still keep it audible for those that need it to hear it. Took three minutes, not visibly noticable, and can be easily removed if needed. I'm sure you've heard of this solution before but it is very effective without the risks that come with taking off the front of your car or making a permanent altercation to the car.

Good luck 🤞

Not to dig up the VESS thread again but has anyone gotten anything but canned responses from Hyundai about a fix? This has to be software. I can't believe there is no way to adjust this then send out a bulletin to dealerships.

Taking the front end off is no small matter.

Alot faster and easier to unplug it through the grill.

Does the car complain or throw error codes about the missing VESS?

Just got my HEV, will either tape it or unplug it
I can tell you the USA market 2022 Tucson Hybrid Ltd. does not.

I don't own a hybrid, but I heard one back up next to me the other day. Literally everyone I could see in the parking lot was wondering where the spaceship was landing, it's bizarrely loud

I unplugged my VESS with the aid of 1/4 metal rod with a "hook" that I bent near the end. I slipped through the grill and was able to unplug the VESS. Best decision ever made! The car is quiet, the neighbors don't get woken up daily, and our Tucson doesn't draw weird stares from everyone within a 1/4 mile! LOL.
After unplugging it, I pulled the plug through the grill and electrical taped the entire female end of the plug so if I ever want to reconnect it, I can. Its been disconnected for 8 months and there are no error codes! You won't regret it! We HATED the sound and REALLY HATED the volume of the sound. Quiet is NICE!!

How do I get to the speaker?
To get to the speaker you will have to remove the front end (it shows how to do this about 11 posts above this one). Some claim to have reached through the grill, but I know my hands won't fit through the small openings. Just easier to unplug the thing. Oh, there is NO LAW that says a hybrid car has to have a VESS speaker. The manufacturers are doing that just to avoid any future lawsuits. But there is no law requiring it.

Whenever I Google this, I find page after page that says the law REQUIRES that the car makes these additional noises. They say it's a federal law as well, so this is not a state by state issue.

I doubt any cop is going to give you a ticket for your car not making sound, but if you get into an accident it could be claimed your fault because your car couldn't be heard.

And whats so crazy about NOT HEARING IT, is I have been in my Mustang backing up and people get behind it. It is loud, it can set off car alarms in the neighborhood. So hearing it or not, people do what ever they like and still walk or pull up behind a person backing up. What a BS making it a law. Thank you for the post. I will do as other have done and cover to get the DBs done, but yet still loud enough to hear.

I visited my DMV office and asked about this. They said it is "suggested" but there is no law (state or federal) that they could show me that says it "shall" be required. Once again, I'm talking about a HYBRID car, not a fully electric vehicle. I also own two Toyota Priuses and neither has ANY sound making device. Do whatever you want to your vehicle though. Do I always drive the speed limit? No Do I always come to a complete stop at stop signs? No. Do I choose to make my car silent? Yes.

This is just one of the articles I found stating that it is in fact a law, it's from PBS

This article is from 2016. That could have all changed by now. I would like to see one a lot newer or a law in print.
