Hyundai Extended Warranty after purchase.

For those considering purchasing or already have and declined the dealer extended warranty options, you can still purchase an extended warranty directly from Hyundai that adds to your factory warranty (adds rental car and trip interruption reimbursement for warranty issues) and extends the full coverage provided by the factory for 5years/60K miles to 10years/100K or 10years/120K.

I learned about this buying my last 2 Hondas because I will only by extended warranties directly from the company that makes the cars.

The Hyundai dealer I found and bought mine from is in Burlington Vermont, the contact is:

Crystal Careau

Crystal got more info from me by e-mail:
----------------------------
What is the VIN?
What is the exact mileage?
What is the purchase price of the vehicle?
What was the purchase date?
What is your address and phone number?
-----------------------------

sent me this quote:
10year/100K/0 deductible: $1,398 (I bought this one)
10year/120K/0 deductible: $1,598

She e-mailed the contract and I called her with credit card info, got everything in the mail a couple of days later.

In my case, the dealer I purchased from was selling the same warranty but backed up by his dealership parent company (valid at any Hyundai dealership in the US). I had some fun negotiating him down, he started at $3,300, then $2,500 and $2,100, then finally told me there was no way I could pass up 10year/100K/0 deductible for $1,750. I did and saved $350 plus my warranty is Hyundai backed. Crystal told me that they are selling them for $300 over their cost.

I see some comments in threads about depreciation and reliability concerns so I thought it worth passing along this info, especially for those that didn't realize you could buy this sort of thing, from Hyundai motors, after purchasing the vehicle.

cheers, roger

Thanks for sharing this info. On the surface it looks reasonable but looking at some details $35/day & 10 days for rental car isn't all that great considering that there are lots of reports on other Hyundai / Kia forums of parts taking many weeks to arrive while the car sits disabled.

Did you purchase from Crystal after your initial purchase?
How long (months & miles) after purchase does one have to get the extended factory warranty? With Subaru it was 36/36.
Is it transferable to a new owner if you sell the car?
Is it refundable if you sell the car prior to 10/100?
Thanks for sharing this info.

yes, I purchased it a week after buying the Tucson
not sure how long you have, often it is available until the full manufacturers warranty has expired, which would be 5/60K for Hyundai.
under 'Transfers' it says you can transfer it as part of a private party sale but not if a dealership is involved (trade-in).
under 'Cancellation' it says you get a full refund if within 30 days, after that the refund is prorated based on either time or miles, minus any claims and minus a $75 fee.

I am being offered the same extended warranty for 1398. Is it worth it?

What criteria do people use to buy the warranty?

I asked the dealer why should I take the warranty when hyundai has 10 year/100k America's best warranty

The response was that the real bumper to bumper from hyundai without any fire print is 3 years, then 5 years has some fine print (like electronics or electricals not covered) and 10 year warranty really covers the piwertrain (engine, wheels, axle).

I'm inclined to take it as we will keep the car for over 100k miles to hand it down to someone in the family

Hence seeking general guidance.

Appreciate it

I think they explained it correctly, the extended warranty covers everything completely for 10 years and either 100K or 120K miles, except maintenance stuff. Plus it adds some stuff the factory warranty doesn't have (rental car, trip interruption reimbursement).

Are they offering you the actual Hyundai extended warranty from Hyundai?
Thinking about this as well. I've never been an extended warranty guy but may look into this if the car is a keeper (I think it will be), as we tend to keep cars we like for long periods. We've just had the car a couple of days so to be determined. I'd like to know how long you have to get the Hyundai extended warranty and what happens to the price as time goes on if you wait.

FWIW, our dealer said they don't sell the Hyundai warranty (likely cause they don't make enough on it). Instead, the F&I manager tried to pressure us into buying the one they offer from Zurich. 3 levels, no price comparisons other than how much it would add to a payment. So, for the all inclusive one, they wanted an additional monthly fee of over $100 /month. That's more than $4800 for it...highway robbery! There's also lots of fine print with these aftermarket warranties.

Yes. Directly from Hyundai.

Which makes this attractive. Peace of mind as well should increase resale value for seelling to a private party

When I purchased my previous Toyota, the dealerships finance guy offered something similar ... with zero transparency. For my spidy sense tingling and needless to say, declined the offer thinking what the heck.. its a Toyota!!
I am generally not an extended warranty guy but have gotten the Hyundai extended warranties. They can be shopped or negotiated for a reasonable price, are seamlessly handled thru dealerships and, for long term ownership add some peace of mind and resale value. It’s nice to be able to do a private sale of a 8 or 9 year old car and say there is a bumper to bumper factory warranty. I got the $1598/120k/10 year on my new limited plug in. The selling dealer matched the price offered from Crystal.
My personal experience with cars is things fail right away or at their expected lifetime. Rarely do you have unexplained failures at 80k miles.

I've never done the extended warranties, and pocket the money. I can budget for a repair, and all the money I would have spent I just keep in my savings. Of the 4 cars I've owned and never needed a warranty that's like 10 grand I could put towards a repair

Great information! Thanks for sharing. I've been on the fence about purchasing an extended warranty, but given the price quoted, I’m going to move ahead and purchase the 10/120k/0 deductible package.

Hi Roger,

Crystal Careau, from Burlington Hyundai Subaru is a Hyundai dealer too, right?
Crystal was very responsive and the pricing was as the OP stated. No surprises! I opted to purchase the 10 year/120k/0 deductible Platinum HPP plan @ $1598.

I was able to get my selling dealer, Curry Hyundai in NY, to match that price. Simplified things and it was wrapped into the 0% 48month financing. (Happy to have someone give me no interest money)
Considering that a number of different companies offer extended warranty ( Zurich, Endurance, CarShield, Hyundai own HMF branch, etc.) - it is not really clear from the above posts, which one was offered by the dealer to those who bought extended warranty and posted how much they paid. I see posters mentioned Zurich in one post and Platinum HPP ( which looks like Hyundai Protection Plan but I could be wrong) in another, and in a different thread, Platinum Plus was mentioned ( not sure which company offers such). After negotiating a little bit ( just "for fun"), I was offered Zurich comprehensive ( 10years/120K miles) for $2,400. It looks reasonable price to me ( and I read "Terms and Conditions" and, especially, "What is not covered" part of the agreement), but to compare "oranges to apples"( different companies terms and conditions), it would help to know which company you obtained coverage from. Thank you in advance!
I would only purchase an extended warranty offered from the manufacturer. Most, if not all, who responded above purchased a Hundai extended warranty - including me.

Most everyone who has posted of the posts I have read bought from Hyundai. And some shopped around to different Hyundai dealers.
Platinum plus is their new highest coverage. Platinum HPP is the one just below it. I bought the Platinum Plus @ 2100, taxes included.
I would never, ever buy from anyone but the manufacturer. As it is this was the first time I ever decided it was worth getting.

Your mileage may vary.

Actually, I was shopping at well known Hyundai dealership name ( where, as well, I bought my Genesis and serviced it for many years), and Zurich extended warranty was their offered option only.
But I did sent email to Hyundai directly and will see what they will offer.
There is no rush (yet) to get extended warranty :) but I am appreciated for all inputs provided.

Thank you for this post! Dealer originally offered me $2800 for platinum coverage. I told the finance manager that I could get it for $1600 from another dealer online but if they could match it I would get it with the car purchase. A couple clicks of the keyboard and she was able to match it. Never hurts to ask!
Looking at this now. Anyone have more recent experience with pricing?
