I’ve had my ‘22 Tucson 2.5 since May ’22. I only have 4200 on it and the dealer said to wait on the oil change till May ‘23. I do mostly short trip, under 5 mile locally. Do I wait, get oil change now from local quick change store ( that I pay for), or wait as recommended by dealer? I’m in a quandary on the issue.

I paid for the first oil change by the dealer at 2000 miles. I had them draw some of the oil into a clean glass jar that I provided, just in case the oil needed to be tested or showed any metal flakes from break-in. This also gave the dealer a chance to apply any TSBs (there weren't any) and check for the known problem of leaks around the oil pan (there weren't any). The dealer had a few coupons they applied, so the cost was reasonable. I would have gladly paid full price just to get the break-in oil out of the engine. (Although I now recognize how few "miles" were actually on the PHEV engine, since I do most of my driving in EV mode.)

I will go back to the dealer for the "free" oil change and tire rotation at the initial recommended mileage.

You are probably OK waiting for another 1000-1500 miles, especially since your engine isn't a turbo, but if it were me I would err on the side of caution. There are also reports that the gassers get to a point in break-in where the power jumps significantly. The worn metal from that break-in process ends up in the oil.

I would never drive a new engine any significant miles w/o changing out the oil. That has been the philosophy of every car lover/gear head I've ever known. To each his own, but if I'm gonna spend 30k on a car, a 25 dollar oil change is REALLY cheap insurance. I can think of a thousand ways to save money, but NOT THAT ONE.

$70 or so for most who are not going to change the oil and filter themselves. But the sentiment stands even if just for peace if mind.

I have the 1.6 turbo is my Ultimate hybrid and had the first oil change at just under 5k or about 3,000 miles. I'm almost at 10k and planned to take it in then. However, supposedly synthetic oil is good for much longer than regular oil so I welcome opinions on stretching out the distance between oil changes. Here in Canada we did not get any free oil changes and at something over $100 it would be nice to put a few more k's on in between. That said, I've usually had my oil changed twice a year regardless of mileage. Any thoughts?

Thanks to all for the feedback! I’m starting to lean towards getting that oil change sooner, probably by the dealer and pay if necessary. As you’ve all said, for peace of mind.

I (well, many of us actually) will be enthused to find what your charge winds up for the non-scheduled service, and whether they'll be receptive to allowing 'customer-furnished fluid'. A 5-qt. jug of 0-20 Dexos Full Syn. Quaker State WAS ~$24 at WalMart and 2 more qts. @ $6ea. (total cap. is 6qts. plus one cup). There's not much point in nudging to supply your own filter, though. They're ~$13 online for 'That Genuine Hyundai Feeling' and ~$18 retail from the parts counter (all 10mo. pricing).

I paid to have mine changed at 2000mi. I was planning a long trip and wanted the break-in oil changed out. I didn't know it took synthetic, but that didn't matter. The service advisor thought I was crazy.

EeeRR?! Service thought you were crazy for not knowing it takes only synthetic? Or, thought you're crazy for expecting them to install only synthetic..... The owner manual is quite explicit in specifying the former.

Or thought you were crazy for changing it out so soon? I've been a member of a number of different forums for the past 13 years, mostly car and motorcycle enthusiasts. I don't know ANYBODY that would even consider waiting 7500 miles to change oil on a brand new engine. I know I wouldn't. And since we're talking about a brand new engine, let's not forget the importance of using top tier fuel in it as well. For those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about, do a google search on "top tier fuels." You owe it to your engine to put quality gasoline in it. Think it doesn't matter? If you don't already know, please: do some reading. I promise it will be worth your time.

Top tier fuel is important. It has detergents that clean valves, etc. that cheap, off brand fuels do not. I’ve noticed most top name brands fuel stations are all carrying top tier. As for the oil change, they still don’t recommend I do it before have 6800 miles on it ( bought car May ‘22). I think they just to cheap to give me the free oil change before that time.

I agree with Jay, rough service interval. In my opinion short trips hard on vehicle as your engine does not reach full operating temperature. Oil is cheap insurance in the long run. My first oil change was 1000 miles and every 5000 miles after that. Synthetic Oil.

I too changed my oil at 1000 miles. I paid $8 for the Hyundai oil filter and $32 for the full synthetic oil. It's worth a meal out to have the comfort of fresh oil after breakin. I did it again at 5K and just a day ago at 10K. I really don't want the dealer messing with my car unless it's a warranty issue.

The dealership I bought my Tucson from has an oil for life program. Purchase a vehicle from them and free oil changes for life. They honor every 6 months or 5000 miles. My first oil change will be next week at the 6 month mark with a little over 4000 miles. I will be having them put in Amsoil XL that I'm providing. Only giving them 6 quarts I'll put the last bit in when I get home. Also will be pulling an oil sample to send to Blackstone Labs to start keeping a record of every change.

Well alright alright alright! Looking forward to your findings soon, and as comparison with the one I had done at just 500 miles last August. Currently at only half your miles since delivery 10 months ago it's going to be quite some time for the second change planned at 3,000, along with second Blackstone report.
BTW, congrats on scoring and patronizing that 1-in-a-hundred dealers that practices win-win relationships with its customers.

This is my first vehicle with this dealer and first time getting service done so will have to see how they do. As of now I don't think I can trust a dealership tech enough to give them 7 quarts of oil and oil have 6.1 quarts put in. Which is why I'll top off the last little bit myself.

Yes. The 'ol Trust But Verify. Don't leave home without it. Wise tack on the oil, as it's far easier to add a cup than remove one, ..... or 5. I take it you're marking the filter canister to assure they make the effort to at least loosen it a half-turn to give you that comfortable feeling they've changed the filter.

It sounds like you been around the block a couple times. And since I never use quickie oil change places (typically with the trenches), a fave experiment I'll do with any new shop is mention to the manager, "I haven't seen the underside of this rig yet, and would love a chance to eyeball things once it's in the air, ok"? A "Yes" and there's potential. A "No, insurance won't let customers in the work area.", and it's unfortunately going to be a 'one and done' for that shop.

Getting my oil changed in between each complementary change. It doesn't hurt to change the oil more frequently. I'd rather err on the side of caution. it's worth it to protect a $30,000 + investment. Do oil changes at the dealership through the complimentary time and then at any place that records it for warranty purposes. Warranties don't recognize do-it-yourself oil changes. Dealerships can't refuse to change it early and who cares what they think. They didn't make the investment. Manufacturers want you to stretch out the maintenance so they can boast that your ownership with them is cheaper. I don't care if it is synthetic or not, no oil should be in your engine for 10,000 miles or even 7,500, especially when it's only $60 to change it.
