service reminder at 4400 miles?

3885 Views 20 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  igknight
2022 Tuscon Hybrid. Purchased mid December 2021. While driving today i got a service reminder at 4400 miles. I thought the first service was at 8000. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Bill

For severe-service, the first oil/filter change is at 5000 miles. See pages 9-11 and 9-12 of the manual.

I just went through that. Hyundai uses synthetic blend engine oil by default. The synthetic blend has less mileage between oil changes. I asked the dealer about that, and I was able to switch to full synthetic engine oil for free and my oil change interval is now 5000 miles instead of 3750 miles. It would be double that, but Hyundai considers the Chicago area to be an extreme service area because of many factors. Ask your dealer about it. They don’t tell you up front, presumably because they will make more money off of you with more frequent oil changes.

I got my first service reminder at 8000 miles. I'm pretty sure the ECU keeps track of the types of miles you drive and reports to bluelink accordingly. In my case I drove no cold-start short-trip drives where the engine didn't fully warm up. I also logged 3000 road miles.

I got me first reminder at 3000 miles. The dealership told me that they set the maintenance reminder interval on the vehicle at the dealership. They can change the interval for your Tucson based on engine, oil type, and whether or not you are considered severe service.
I think it is set to 3,750 by default. Had mine serviced at 7,000 and dealer was trying to tell me they recommended every 3,750…. And lo and behold I get a service reminder 3,750 after that service…

Hello. Oil changes for hybrid vehicles with the 1.6L turbo are recommended at 7000 miles with synthetic blend oil under normal service conditions. Hyundai designated certain areas to be severe service areas. If you are in a severe service area, oil changes are recommended at 3750 miles with synthetic blend. If you switch to full synthetic, oil changes are recommended at 5000 mile intervals for severe service areas.

They also change it based on getting you in to do more oil changes. Maintenance is easy money for them. If you are asking them about why Chicago is considered "severe", they are going to make up a bunch of BS to get you in the door more. They aren't the ones you should be going to for maintenance advice.

If you want to maintain warranty, just follow what the back of the manual states. The 2.5L in U.S. is rated for 8000/5000 mi Normal/Severe, whereas in Canada it is 8000km (5000mi) normal, with no proper mention of what the severe usage is. To be honest, if you aren't getting full synthetic in a new vehicle, you probably shouldn't be going to that dealership, or shop.

Yes, mine was set to 5000 km from the factory, resulting in a similar "early" reminder. With my Ultimate, I can set whatever service reminder interval I want (not sure if other trims have a lesser capability), so I set it to the recommendation, per my owner's manual, 8000 km.

Personally I like doing the first oil change early as it is a great way to catch any potential break in issues, but definitely not doing oil changes less than 8k km +\- 10%.
I agree. Get that breakin oil out of there quickly. 1000 miles on mine.
Why would anyone use a syn blend. Full syn. is much better for the engine. Ask any real mechanic.
According to Blue Link I only get 4 free oil changes. That matches the manual for normal use , which says 8000 miles between oil changes. The dealer I bought the car from said 7500 miles between oil changes but suggested I change the oil every 3750, effectively giving me every other oil change free. The dealer I am bringing it to tomorrow told me 6000 miles and if I wait till past 7000 Hyundai won't pay for it. Also, the manual says if you use anything but full synthetic you have to go by the severe use schedule and if you read the list of what they consider severe use, it covers just about any type of normal driving that people do from time to time. According to the list, just living in New England is classified as severe use. If I get recommended oil changes free, and they judge me to be severe use, I should get free oil changes every 5000 miles, which is what severe use requires. It seems to be intentionally confusing. I am going to bring my manual tomorrow and see if I can get the dealer to commit to something on paper as to what the requirements are. Fat chance of that.

If your motor calls for 0-20 like mine does that is only available in a full synthetic unless your dealership has custom oil made. For the guys that said they use synthetic blend they did in the older cars. I asked them when mine popped at 7500 miles and they Said they put synthetic blend in it. Once the lady pulled up the paperwork she said she forgot mine was a 22 and all 22s require full synthetic to maintain the warranty. If they actually put blended in there I would raise hell and make them replace with full synthetic 0-20 immediately. I see a few of you said you can change it. How did you change the Milage for oil changes. I cannot find it anywhere in the car. It popped up saying it was due at 7500 even though I had it changed two weeks prior so the dealer clearly didn’t reset it. I would like to change it to 5k

I see you're in the USA but you haven't provided any info (via vehicle info or signature on your forum account) identifying what vehicle & trim you have; if it's an HEV Limited (like my HEV Ultimate), then you can go to: Settings | Vehicle | Cluster | Service Interval

If this helps you at all, a "Like" would be appreciated.

I’ll check it out I do not remember seeing that option on mine. It’s a limited 2.5l gas no hybrid in the us.
What's everyone's choice of oil on the tucson gas and hybrids/phev?

I believe you can set your service reminder yourself, for whatever duration you want. The dealer probably set it at the lower number to get him in in sooner.

Yes. This. Also what's the best religion?

Stupid question: when talking about PHEVs, how can I tell the number of kms run on ICE? Because the oil change would need to be based on that. If I use the car in EV mode about 90% of the time, those 8000 km should be way more than that. Does the car know? How can I read that log?

That isn't a stupid question. You could calculate your ICE mileage based on your best estimate of your percentage of EV driving. If it was less than 8000km/ year I would change my oil once a year regardless of mileage.
