For those who may be interested, I posted my experience with Android Auto wireless device in a different thread ( somehow, we got deviated from the original topic of that thread:)). Links are below

I can only add that in my car ( Tucson Hybrid Limited ) USB data port ( where wireless AA device is plugged in) does NOT stay always On when car is off ( it only stays ON for approx. a minute or few and then shuts off).

I'll have to double-check, but I also have the Hybrid Limited and I'm pretty sure that if I walk by my car hours after turning it off my phone connects to the AAWireless.
My observation was based on the following:
  • when I parked car in the garage/my house, turned engine off and walked into the house - if I am still in a very close proximity to the garage area - I can clearly see that my phone is still "hanging on" onto Android Auto app ( shows that phone is still in navigation mode) but it switches off in a minute or two.
  • next test was, after I parked car and turned engine off, I just stayed next to the car and watch wireless AA device lights , they went off after a few minutes and phone also disconnected at that point from the device.
Thus, I assumed that it is USB data port shuts down but, it is possible, that wireless AA device shuts itself off but I doubt, because it raises the question: "What would trigger such shutdown?"

  • Connect/disconnect with car: On some cars the USB port always stays powered, which means AAWireless will constantly try to connect to the phone, even when the car is off. We implemented functionality to start up AAWireless when the phone connects to the Bluetooth Headset connection of the car and disconnects when the Bluetooth Headset connection is lost.

Even we are talking about two different devices - you are referring to "AAwireless" device and I am using "Ottocast" device, I think the point of current discussion is: " Does USB data port in Tucson Hybrid Limited stays ON ALL the time - even after engine is off or USB data port does shut off after some time?", is that correct assumption? As I stated in my previous post, my assumption was and still is that port stays on only for a few minutes after engine is OFF and I explained why I think so. Moreover, a minutes ago, after I read your post and followed/read the link for "AAwireless" device features, I walked back to the garage ( I didn't drive car since yesterday), looked through the window ( without opening doors) - to make sure that OTTOCAST device has no light and attempted/forced my phone to establish Bluetooth connection to OTTOCAST device - no luck, because device is OFF. Period. I understand, this is in no way proof of USB data port being not powered off but I am not going to start pocking with multimeter in attempt to prove or disapprove whatever port status is when car engine is turned OFF. I am satisfied with the current "state of affairs" and it works well for me.

You could buy a small USB stick with a power light (I have one somewhere) and plug that in. If the light goes off when you lock the car, you will know there's no power.

Hi Alan..."long time no see":) As I wrote in one of the posts above - OTTOCAST device has light - it is lit when device is ON - and light goes OFF in a few moments/minutes when car engine is off...not sure if USB drive would make a difference in identifying presense of powered USB port ( especially consdiering that USB drive light would be only active when data is either read or written)

I wasn't replying to you my reply was to the thread. I read the thread and I see how it started. And I was replying because the AAwireless is indeed being talked about.

Further - USB always on or not isn't the whole issue. One of the complaints in the threads was when going inside their house their cell phone would continue to try to connect to the device for however long the USB does stay active. My post shows there is a solution to that.
You are right - my bad, I thought it was reply to my post. One thing I noticed, we - owners or soon owners to be - posting messages and, on number of occasions, even if issue/posting is belong to the same topic, as in this particular case - "Wireless Android auto" - there are some "variables" involved that can affect offered suggestion or validate poster own experience. Those variables, I am talking about, are different car models(ICE vs HEV vs PHEV), car trims ( with additional options/packages), different wireless and/or wired devices used and different phone models, etc. All of it must be taken into consideration when we start complaining or explaining or commenting...I can only speculate, I really don't know, if Hybrid Limited may have different way to power USB data port ( because it is wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay?) vs. Hybrid SEL or even ICE trims? Myself, I am trying to be clear as much as possible in details ( what car trim, device model, etc.) I am referring to/dealing with - in hope it would help others.
